第418回公開テスト（午前）重要単熟語のおさらい

1. marquee（CEFRレベル：-）
第386回公開テスト（午前）重要単熟語のおさらいで取り上げたmqrqueeを再び取り上げます。[mɑːˈkiː]（アクセントは第2音節）と発音するmarqueeは、音を聞いても文字で見ても意味がわからない人が多いと思います。まずはmarqueeの意味を英語で確認してみましょう。

というわけで、marqueeは「（劇場などの入口上部の）大きな看板」を表します。

もともと劇場や映画館の煌びやかな巨大看板を意味するmarqueeですが、現在ではお店の店名などを示す（入口上部の）看板も指すようです。

2. commonplace（CEFRレベル：-）
commonplaceは名詞で使うこともありますが、ここでは形容詞の「よくある、普通の」という意味を取り上げます。

💎In big cities, traffic congestion is commonplace.
（大都市では交通渋滞は当たり前です）
💎Self-checkout machines have become commonplace in supermarkets.

3. complement（CEFRレベル：C1）（ワードツリーP80）
complementには「①～を補完する、②（色や料理など）にぴったり合う」という動詞の意味と、「補完するもの」という名詞の意味があります。

compliment「賛辞、お世辞」とスペルが似ているので混同しないように注意しましょう。

4. seafarer（CEFRレベル：C2）
seafarerはCEFRレベルC2の難単語ですが、頭にsea（海）が付いているのと、語尾に人を表す-erが付いていることから、海に関係する人を表す名詞であると推測できます。

というわけで、seafarerは「船乗り、航海者」という意味です。

5. periodically（CEFRレベル：-）（ワードツリーP228）
periodicallyは「定期的に」という意味を表す副詞です。

（安全を確保するために、機器は定期的に点検する必要があります）
💎The museum periodically changes its exhibits.
（博物館では定期的に展示品を入れ替えます）

名詞のperiodical（〔新聞や雑誌などの〕定期刊行物）も大事ですので、併せて押さえておきましょう。

6. Keep me posted.（CEFRレベル：-）（ワードツリーP385）
Keep me posted.は「定期的に最新情報を知らせてください」という意味を表す口語表現です。ワードツリーではI’ll keep you posted.（定期的にお知らせします）という口語表現とセットでPlease keep me posted.を紹介しています。

Keep me posted.
It is an informal expression used when you want someone to continue telling you new information as the situation develops.

7. endcap display（CEFRレベル：-）
endcapは、「end（端）+ cap（蓋、帽子）」→「端に被せる蓋」→「端を覆うもの」から、陳列棚の端を覆うように配置する商品展示台などを指し、endcap displayで「陳列棚の端の商品展示、エンド陳列」という意味を表します。大型書店に行くと、書棚の端（endcap）に台が置かれていて、新刊などが平積みされているのを見たことがあると思います。また、大型スーパーではendcap displayとして、季節の商品やプロモーションキャンペーン中の商品、入荷したばかりの新商品などが陳列されます。

8. apprenticeship（CEFRレベル：C1）（ワードツリーP269）
まずはapprenticeの意味から確認していきましょう。apprenticeは、「apprent（= apprehend）（つかむ）+ ice」→「技術を掴もうとする人」から、「弟子、見習い」という意味を表します。

apprenticeにshipが付くと、「見習い期間、見習いとしての仕事」という意味になります。

9. depot（CEFRレベル：-）
ディーポウ[diːpoʊ]と発音するdepotは、「de（離）+ pot（置く）」→「離して置く」→「離れた場所に保管する」から、「倉庫、保管庫」という意味を表す名詞です。

💎The delivery company operates several depots across the country.
（配送会社は全国に複数の倉庫を運営しています）

（レンタル収納倉庫〔トランクルーム〕は、さまざまなサイズのユニットを提供しています）

depotには「（鉄道やバスの）車庫、ターミナル」の意味もあるので、併せて押さえておきましょう。

（バスは中央車庫で清掃され、修理されます）

10. adaptation （CEFRレベル：C1）（ワードツリーP109）
adapt（～を適応させる、〔映画化するために小説など〕を脚色する、改作する）に名詞化の語尾tionが付いたadaptationは、「適応、脚色、改作」という意味を表します。TOEICでは「脚色、改作」という意味が狙われるので、ハイスコアを目指す学習者は必ず押さえておきましょう。

💎The director made several changes in his adaptation of the book.
