第420回公開テスト（午前）重要文法のおさらい

※この記事で紹介する単熟語は、一部『TOEIC®L&R テスト英単語・熟語ワードツリー』（旺文社）をベースにしています。

1. consider O to be C（構文／considerの語法）（860レベル）
第412回公開テスト（午前）重要文法のおさらいで取り上げたconsider O to be Cを再掲します。considerは、①consider the plan（計画を検討する）のように名詞句を目的語にとるケース、②consider accepting the plan（計画を受け入れることを検討する）のように動名詞句を目的語にとるケース、③consider the plan to be feasible（計画を実行可能だと考える）のように名詞句を目的語にとりつつ直後に補語を従えるケース（to beは省略可能）の3つの語法を押さえておく必要があります。①②は第3文型、③は第5文型です。ここでは③の語法を取り上げます。

consider O to be C
to think of, regard, or judge someone or something (O) as having a certain quality or status (C).

すなわち、consider O to be Cは「OをCと考える（見なす）」という意味です。

💎Many people consider her to be a leader in the field.
（多くの人は彼女をその分野のリーダーだと考えています）
💎The committee considers the proposal to be unacceptable.
（委員会はその提案は受け入れられないと判断しました）

to beが省略されたconsider O C（意味はconsider O to be Cと同じ）のかたちに慣れておくことも大事です。

💎They consider him an expert.
（彼らは彼を専門家だと考えています）
💎The plan is considered unacceptable.
（この計画は受け入れられないと考えられています）

2. once S V （接続詞／onceの語法）（600レベル）（ワードツリー：P229）
第402回公開テスト（午前）重要文法のおさらいで取り上げたonceの語法を再掲します。接続詞のonceは後ろにSV（節）を従えて「一旦～すると、～するとすぐに」という意味を表します。

💎Once the new system is installed, employees will be able to access the database remotely.
（新しいシステムがインストールされると、従業員はリモートでデータベースにアクセスできるようになります）
💎The HR department will send the revised handbook once it is approved by management.
（経営陣の承認が得られ次第、人事部が改訂版ハンドブックを送付します）

3. B, C as well as A（比較／構文）（600レベル）
B, C as well as Aは「A同様BとCも」という意味を表す同等比較表現です。ただ、語順的に「B、Cに加えてAも」のような訳し方をすることが多いです。

4. going forward vs. previously（接続副詞）（990レベル）
going forwardは直訳すると「先に進めると」ですが、文頭で接続副詞的に使う場合どのような意味になるでしょうか？また、previsoulyは「以前に」という意味ですが、文頭で接続副詞的に「事前に、前もって」の意味で使うことはできるでしょうか？

では、モヤモヤしながら次の問題を解いてみてください。

The renovation of the building has been completed, and it will reopen next month. Our gathering will resume in the large meeting room on the first floor. ——-, guests can check floor plans and facilities on the Web site.

(B) Previously

まずは(A)(B)それぞれの意味を英語で確認してみましょう。

going forward
in the future, starting from now; from now on

previously
before now or before a particular time

going forwardの意味は「将来は、今後は」です。言われてみれば・・・という感じだと思いますが、初見ではなかなか意味を取りづらい分詞構文です。建物の改装が終わって、ミーティングなどの再開予定を伝えたあと、ゲストは今後ウェブサイトでフロアの見取り図や設備を確認できる旨を伝える流れは自然ですので、(A)のGoing forwardが正解です。では、previouslyに「事前に、前もって」の意味はないのでしょうか？ありません。previously ≠ in advanceです。

💎The renovation of the building has been completed, and it will reopen next month. Our gathering will resume in the large meeting room on the first floor. Going forward, guests can check floor plans and facilities on the Web site.（建物の改修工事は完了して来月再オープンいたします。集会は1階の大会議室にて再開いたします。今後、ゲストはウェブサイトにてフロアの見取り図や施設情報をご確認いただけます。）

5. while S V（接続詞）（730レベル）（ワードツリーP214）
whileは「～する間に」という”期間”の意味でも登場しますが、TOEICのPart 7（長文読解）では「～の一方で、～ではあるが」という”対比・逆接”の意味で頻出します。

（多くの顧客がオンラインで買い物をする一方で、実店舗を訪れることを好む顧客も依然として存在します）

（私は彼の小説の大ファンというわけではありませんが、週末によく読んでいます）

6. report to N（reportの語法）（860レベル）（ワードツリーP211）
report（報告する）自体は470点レベルの動詞ですが、ハイスコアを目指す学習者は「report to + <人>（～に業務報告をする、～の部下である）」、「report to + <場所>（～に出向く、～に到着したことを伝える）」の意味を押さえることが大事です。

report to someone
to tell someone about what has been happening, or what you are doing as part of your job
to be responsible to someone at work and be managed by them

report to somewhere
to go somewhere and officially state that you have arrived

💎You report to Ms. Plum in the sales department.
（あなたは営業部のプラムさんの部下です）
💎You are required to report to Mr. Cho for their first month of training.
（最初の1ヶ月間の研修期間中はチョー氏に業務報告してください）
💎All new hires report to the Human Resource Department on their first day for orientation.
（新入社員は全員、初日に人事部に出頭して〔出向いて／到着したことを伝えて〕オリエンテーションを受けます）

7. unless S V（接続詞）（600レベル）
unlessは「～の場合を除いて、もし～しない場合は」という意味を表す接続詞です。

unless
except if; used to say that something will happen or be true if something else does not happen or is not true

💎I won’t go to the party unless you come with me.
（あなたが一緒に行かない限り、私はパーティーには行きません）
💎Cancellation fees will be incurred unless you notify us at least 48 hours in advance.
（ご予約の48時間前までにご連絡いただけない場合は、キャンセル料が発生いたします）
