第414回公開テスト（午前）重要単熟語のおさらい

※この記事で紹介する単熟語は、一部『TOEIC®L&R テスト英単語・熟語ワードツリー』（旺文社）をベースにしています。

1. You are in good hands.（CEFRレベル：-）
広告に登場するYou are in good hands.は口語表現で「私たちが責任を持ってサポートするので安心してください」という意味を表します。「あなたはよい手の中にいる」→「あなたは私たちの優れた手腕（スキル）の中にいる」→「あなたは安心して私たちのサポート（技術支援）を受けられる」ということです。

You are in good hands.
You are being well taken care of. / You can relax and trust the person or organization responsible for you.

2. recognized（CEFRレベル：B2）（ワードツリーP30,114）
まず、動詞のrecognizeは「①（人や物）を認識する、②（事実や業績など）を認める、③（人）を評価する、表彰する」という意味を表します。

分詞形容詞のrecognizedは、次のような意味を表します。

recognized
widely known, acknowledged, or accepted as true, valid, or important; officially or publicly accepted

💎The award-winning produce market is widely recognized.
（受賞歴のある農産物市場は広く知られて〔評価されて〕います）
💎Mr. Fitzpatrick has long been recognized as an expert on zoology.
（フィッツパトリック氏は、長きにわたって動物学の専門家として認められています）

3. assignment（CEFRレベル：B1）（ワードツリーP67,155）
assignmentには「（仕事などの）割り当て」という意味もありますが、TOEICでは「（割り当てられる）仕事」の方の意味で頻出します。

assignment
a task or piece of work that somebody is given to do, usually as part of their job or studies

💎on assignment（業務で、任務で）
💎I’d like to discuss the assignment if you have time.
（時間があればその業務について話し合いたいと思います）

4. be open to（CEFRレベル：B1）
be open toは「～に対して開かれている」という意味を表し、求人広告では「be open to <人>」や「be open to <事>」のかたちで”受けれる対象”を述べます。

（このポジションは学生および新卒者を対象としています）

5. missing（CEFRレベル：A2）
missingは人や物がいつもある場所に（い）ないことから、「（人が）行方不明の」「（物が）見当たらない」という意味を表します。ただ、TOEICでは人が失踪したり行方不明になることはあり得ないため、後者の意味で登場します。

6. docent（CEFRレベル：-）
[doʊsent]（ドウセント）と発音するdocentは、「（博物館などの）案内人、ガイド」という意味を表す名詞です。「銅銭と動線に詳しいdocent」という語呂合わせで覚えます。

7. stumble upon（CEFRレベル：C1）
stumbleは「躓（つまず）く」という意味を表す動詞ですが、stumble uponは「～を偶然見つける」という意味を表す句動詞です。

stumble uponは、discover／find／spotなどで言い換えることができるということも押さえておきましょう。

8. retreat（CEFRレベル：C1）（ワードツリーP88,252）
第346回公開テスト（午前）重要単熟語のおさらいでも取り上げたretreatを再度取り上げます。英字新聞に登場するretreatは「撤退、後退」の意味であることが多いですが、TOEICでは「避難所、保養所」の意味で登場します。どちらの意味も語源「re（後ろに）+treat（引く）→第一線から身を引く場所」から意味が派生しています。

retreatは以下のコロケーション（フレーズ）で頻出します。

💎company retreat（社員旅行）
💎wellness retreat（保養のための旅行）

「retreat = a place you can go to that is quiet」なので、company retreatは「会社の保養所」という意味になりそうですが、一般的に「社員旅行」の意味で使われます。ワードツリーのP88に以下の補足説明を載せています。

英語での説明は以下のとおりです。

A company retreat is a planned gathering or event organized by a company for its employees. It typically involves taking employees away from their usual work environment for a certain period, often to a different location such as a resort, hotel, or retreat center. Common features of wellness retreats may include yoga and meditation sessions, healthy eating workshops or cooking classes, fitness activities such as hiking or tai chi, spa treatments, mindfulness practices, and educational seminars on topics related to health and wellness. The goal of a wellness retreat is to provide participants with an opportunity to relax, rejuvenate, and learn new habits or techniques that they can incorporate into their daily lives to support their overall well-being. These retreats often take place in serene and natural environments, such as resorts, retreat centers, or remote locations, to facilitate relaxation and connection with nature.

9. tantalize（CEFRレベル：-）
tantalizeには「じらす」という和訳を当てることも多いですが、英語のまま意味を理解した方がニュアンスを正しく理解できます。

to strongly attract or excite someone’s desire or curiosity, while keeping satisfaction just out of reach

どちらかというと「（欲求など）をそそる、かき立てる」の方が近いです。

（これらの料理はあなたの食欲をそそること間違いなしです）
💎He was tantalized by the possibility of working abroad.
（彼は海外で働く可能性に興味をそそられました）

併せて、分詞形容詞のtantalizing（=tempting）も押さえておきましょう。

（彼女はその提案に興味をそそられました）

10. quintessentially （CEFRレベル：-）
名詞のquintessenseは「quint（5番目の）+ essense（本質、存在）」→「5番目の本質」から、「物事の本質、真髄、典型」という意味を表します。古代ギリシャ〜中世の自然哲学では、天体を構成する4つの元素（水、地球、火、空気）に加えて第5の元素（すべてのものに潜む最も純粋で本質的な物質）があると信じられていました。そこから「第5の元素」を表すquintessenseが「物事の本質、典型」という意味を持つようになりました。形容詞のquitessentialは「典型的な（=typical）」、副詞のquntessentiallyは「典型的に（=typically）」という意味をそれぞれ表します。
