第408回公開テスト（午前）重要単熟語のおさらい

1. news segment（CEFRレベル：-）
news segmentとは「ニュース番組（の中のひとつの区切られたコーナー）」のことです。

news segment
a specific part of a news broadcast that focuses on one topic or story

2. downplay（CEFRレベル：-）
downplayは、「down（下に）＋play（演じる、扱う）→下に扱う」、ということから、「（実際よりも）重要視しない、控えめに話す」という意味を表します。

downplay

（彼女は面接中、自分の業績を控えめに語りました）

3. surge（CEFRレベル：C1）
surgeは「sur（上に）+ ge」→「上がる」から、「急増、急騰」という意味を表す名詞です。

💎Hospitals are preparing for another surge in patients.
（病院は患者の新たな急増に備えています）

また、surgeには動詞の用法もあるので、併せて押さえておきましょう。

4. Credit and Loan（CEFRレベル：-）
Credit and Loanとは与信審査と貸付を担当する部門のことで、主に顧客の信用調査、返済能力の評価、与信枠の設定、リスクアナリシスなどの業務を行います。

（当社の信用・融資部門は、すべての顧客の資金調達リクエストを処理します）

なお、Accounts Payableは買掛金を処理する部門で、主に請求書の処理や支払いスケジュールの管理といった業務を行います。

5. mulch（CEFRレベル：C2）
mulchは最近登場し始めた「根覆い、腐葉土」という意味を表す名詞です。ハイスコアを目指す人はsoil（土、土壌）、fertilizer（肥料）と一緒に押さえておきましょう。

6. pottery（CEFRレベル：C1）（ワードツリーP297）
「ポタリと釉薬（ゆうやく）を垂らす陶器」と語呂合わせで覚えるpotteryは「陶器」という意味を表す名詞です。ただし発音は[pɑːtəri]で、リスニングでは「パタリー」のように聞こえますので注意してください。

ところでpotteryがなぜ「陶器」という意味を表すのかというと、「pot（壺）＋ (t)er（人）＋ ry」→「壺作りの職人がいる場所」→「窯元」→「窯元で作られるもの」だからです。

7. glaze/glazing（CEFRレベル：-）
glazeには「釉薬」という名詞の意味と、「～に釉薬をかける」という動詞の意味があります。動名詞のglazingは「陶器の表面に釉薬をかける作業（工程）、艶出し」という意味を表します。

また、990点満点を目指す人は上記のglaze/glazingの意味とは別に、以下の意味も押さえておきましょう。

glaze
1. to cover food with a liquid which gives it an attractive shiny surface, or a liquid which is put onto food to give it an attractive shiny surface
2. to fit glass into window frames in a house, door etc.

glazing
1. a thin, shiny coating—usually made of sugar, chocolate, or egg wash—that is applied to pastries, donuts, or cakes to add shine or flavor
2. the glass installed in windows, or the process of fitting glass into a frame

💎The chef glazed the donuts with a thin layer of sugar.

💎The glazing on the pastries make them look shiny and delicious.

8. following（CEFRレベル：-）（ワードツリーP281）
TOEICでは、前置詞のfollowingに加えて名詞のfollowingも登場するのでしっかり押さえておきましょう。

following

（そのジャズバンドのファンは、特に南部地域に多くいます）
💎He has a loyal following on SNS who always share his posts.
（彼にはSNS上でいつも彼の投稿をシェアする熱心なフォロワーがいます）

9. check in（CEFRレベル：A2）（ワードツリーP256）
check inと聞くとホテルのチェックインをイメージすると思いますが、スコアアップは望むのであれば、TOEICに頻出するその他のcheck inの意味も押さえておく必要があります。今回は「（荷物）を預ける」という意味のcheck inにフォーカスします。

check in
to leave bags or cases with an official to be put on a plane or train

（2階のサービスデスクで荷物をお預けください）

10. linen （CEFRレベル：C1）（ワードツリーP291）
linenは「リネン（亜麻布）、（亜麻布で織られたシーツやテーブルクロスなどの）リンネル製品」という意味を表す名詞です。発音は「リニン」に近い音になります。
