第412回公開テスト（午前）重要単熟語のおさらい

※この記事で紹介する単熟語は、一部『TOEIC®L&R テスト英単語・熟語ワードツリー』（旺文社）をベースにしています。

1. lumber（CEFRレベル：-）（ワードツリーP255）
lumberは「材木」という意味を表す不可算名詞です。

💎The shed was built from recycled lumber.
（小屋はリサイクル木材で建てられました）

「材木」を表す単語にはtimberもありますが、TOEICではほとんど登場しません。

2. assumption（CEFRレベル：B2）（ワードツリーP13）
assumptionは「as（～の方へ）+ sume（取る）+ (p)tion」→「考えられる方に取ること」から、「想定、推測、思い込み」という意味を表します。

a belief or feeling that something is true or that something will happen, although there is no proof

3. on a budget（CEFRレベル：B2）（ワードツリーP70）
budget（予算）の意味を知っていても、on a budgetの意味を知らなければ会話のやり取りを正しく理解することはできません。

spending within a set amount of money

💎on a budget（限られた予算内で）
💎The company is operating on a budget after last year’s losses.
（その会社は昨年の損失を受けて限られた予算内で運営しています）
💎The department is on a tight budget due to recent cost-cutting measures.
（最近のコスト削減策により、その部門の予算は厳しい状況にあります）

4. engagement（CEFRレベル：C1）（ワードツリーP72）
engagementは、「en（中に）+ gage（誓約）+ ment」→「誓約の中に入ること」から、「婚約、（仕事の）約束、従事、関与」という意味を表します。ただし、TOEICでは「婚約」の意味のengagementは登場しないため、ここでは説明を省きます。

2. being involved with somebody/something in an attempt to understand them/it

5. at one’s own discretion（CEFRレベル：C1）（ワードツリーP41）
discretionは「分別、判断、自由裁量権」という意味を持つ名詞で、ビジネスシーンではat one’s own discretion（自己の判断で）というコロケーションでよく使われます。

according to one’s own judgment or choice, without needing approval from others

（企業に連絡するかどうかは、ご自身の判断で決定してください）

6. scholarship（CEFRレベル：B2）（ワードツリーP305）
sholarshipは「奨学金」という意味を表す名詞で、ワードツリーでは「補助金・資金」カテゴリーで取り上げています。

💎The institute grants scholarships for those studying space science.
（その研究所は、宇宙科学を研究する学生に奨学金を提供します）

7. accomplished（CEFRレベル：C1）
accomplishedは「熟達した」という意味を表す分詞形容詞です。

（彼は長年の経験を持つ優秀なインストラクターです）
💎We are looking for an accomplished writer with strong editorial skills.
（私たちは優れた編集スキルを持つ熟練したライターを探しています）

8. showcase（CEFRレベル：-）（ワードツリーP90）
showcaseには「show（示す）+ case（入れ物、箱）」から「展示ケース、展示」という名詞の意味と、「～を展示する」という動詞の意味があります。

showcase
vt. to present somebody’s abilities or the good qualities of something in an attractive way
n. an event that presents somebody’s abilities or the good qualities of something in an attractive way

💎A lot of companies will showcase their latest products at the event.
（多くの起業がイベントで最新の製品を展示します）

9. distraction（CEFRレベル：-）
distractionは「dis（離す）+ tract（引く）+ ion」→「引き離すこと」→「注意をそらすもの」から、「人の気を散らすもの、気晴らし」という意味を表します。

distraction
1. a thing that takes your attention away from what you are doing or thinking about
2. an activity that entertains you

💎The manager asked staff to reduce distractions during work hours.
（マネージャーはスタッフに対し、勤務時間中に気を散らすものを減らすよう依頼しました）
💎A walk in the park is a pleasant distraction from work.
（公園を散歩するのは仕事の楽しい気晴らしになります）

10. address （CEFRレベル：B2）（ワードツリーP77,352）
addressには「住所、演説」という名詞と、「～に演説する、～に対処する、～に向ける」という動詞の意味があります。ここでは、TOEICでよく狙われる動詞のaddress（～に対処する、～に向ける）を取り上げます。

address
1. to think about a problem or a situation and decide how you are going to deal with it
2. to say something directly to somebody

💎address a complaint（苦情の対処をする）
💎We need to address the root cause of the problem.
（私たちは問題の根本的な原因に対処する必要があります）
💎Questions regarding this policy should be addressed to the administration office.
（この方針に関するご質問は、管理事務所までお問い合わせください）

また、次の言い換えを押さえておくとスコアアップにつながります。

💎We need to address the problem first.
＝ We need to deal with the problem first.
（我々はまずその問題に対処すべきです）
💎Any inquiries should be addressed to Mr. Ying.
＝ Any inquiries should be directed to Mr. Ying.
（質問があればインさんにお願いします）

「～に対処する」のaddressは、resolve（～を解決する）で言い換えることもできます。

💎The company took steps to address customer complaints.
＝ The company took steps to resolve customer complaints.
（その会社は顧客からの苦情に対処するための措置を講じました）
